Using more than 25 tonnes of packaging per year? You need to know about EPR

Packaging legislation is changing this year with the introduction of EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) regulations.  This will change the way packaging waste disposal is funded with the ‘Producer’ (brand owner, packer/filler or importer) becoming responsible.

Many companies are likely to be obligated under EPR as a result of the qualifying thresholds. Generally, if an individual business, subsidiary or group (but not a charity) meet all of the following criteria, then they most likely will have an obligation under EPR:

  • Have an annual turnover of £1 million or more (based on most recent set of accounts).
  • Carry out any of the packaging activities listed in the guidance.
  • Are responsible for over 25 tonnes of packaging in a calendar year (January to December).

Visit our website to read more about it and for handy links to the relevant government guidance.

Although there are still many unanswered questions about these new packaging regulations, it appears that the government is forging ahead with the change.  Don't  delay as it is likely to be mandatory from 1st March 2023 for data to be collected if you are an obligated company.

If you are a Kilby Packaging customer and would like help with your packaging data, just ask your Account Manager who can supply you with a usage/weight report.
