Extended Producer Responsibility at Kilby

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is a regulation packaging suppliers in the UK need to abide, making them financially responsible for the end-of-life management of their packaging.
At Kilby Packaging, we fully support the principles behind EPR. As a responsible packaging supplier, we are committed to helping our customers understand and comply with the new regulations, while continuing to reduce our environmental footprint.

What is EPR and who does it affect?

Under the EPR scheme, which came into effect in stages starting in 2023, businesses that handle packaging must now report detailed information about the materials they place on the market. From 2025, many will also begin to pay fees based on the recyclability of that packaging. This includes brands, importers, and packaging suppliers like Kilby Packaging.
Businesses are required to:
" Report the amount and type of packaging they handle.
" Contribute to the cost of managing packaging waste.
" Use recyclable or reusable materials wherever possible.
If your business meets certain thresholds (e.g., turnover over £1 million and handling more than 25 tonnes of packaging per year), you will have EPR obligations to meet, and we're here to help.

Our commitment to sustainability

At Kilby Packaging, environmental responsibility has always been part of our ethos. Long before the introduction of EPR, we championed the use of renewable, recyclable, and responsibly sourced materials. We continue to invest in sustainable solutions, from lighter weight product designs to packaging that's easier to recycle.

Working with FSC

We work with FSC as they are the leader in sustainable forest management and operate a global forest certification system. We are a Chain of Custody Certificate holder (FSC®C169111) which certifies that where forest-based materials were used in our supply chain, we've upheld sustainable forestry standards that protect forests and the labour rights of all involved. You will find the FSC logo on many of our products, from the boxes we manufacture to a variety of paper mailing bags and postal bags.

Supporting your EPR obligations

We can provide you with a packaging weight report to help you fulfil your obligations, just ask your Account Manager for a copy. We are also committed to offering lighter weight products to our range both stock and bespoke products.

Using more than 25 tonnes of packaging per year? You need to know about EPR

Packaging legislation is changing this year with the introduction of EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) regulations. This will change the way packaging waste disposal is funded with the ‘Producer’ (brand owner, packer/filler or importer) becoming responsible.

Many companies are likely to be obligated under EPR as a result of the qualifying thresholds. Generally, if an individual business, subsidiary or group (but not a charity) meet all of the following criteria, then they most likely will have an obligation under EPR:

Have an annual turnover of £1 million or more (based on most recent set of accounts).
Carry out any of the packaging activities listed in the guidance.
Are responsible for over 25 tonnes of packaging in a calendar year (January to December).

Although there are still many unanswered questions about these new packaging regulations, it appears that the government is forging ahead with the change. Don't delay as it is likely to be mandatory from 1^st March 2023 for data to be collected if you are an obligated company.

Have you weighed in after Christmas yet?

It is now coming to that time of year where packaging waste information must be submitted under The Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations 2007.

Don’t fall foul of the regulations! All businesses who use or handle packaging materials are obligated under the regulations should they meet both of the following criteria:

You must have a turnover of more than £2 million
You handle 50 tonnes of packaging in the calendar year

You may be unaware that you need to do this, actions which are considered handling include the following:

Packing/Filling packaging, i.e. putting goods into packaging or packaging around goods (packer/filler)
Supplying packaged goods to the end user, where they would remove the packaging (seller)
Importing packaging/packaging materials /packaged goods into the UK (import)

We were glad to be able to support Birmingham City University last month, supplying them with boxes for their New Designers exhibition stand design.

As part of their graduating experience, the final year students exhibit their work at New Designers in London – the largest national Product and Furniture graduate exhibition in the UK with over 18,000 visitors. Their course has a history of being highly successful at this event, with students’ winning awards in the last 3 consecutive years.

The event was a great success for the students, we received great feedback from the University “the boxes have been a huge asset in the look and ease of assembling our stand! One of our students has won an award, with several other shortlists. Once again thank you so much for your kind sponsorship, it really has made the difference”.

Sustainability at our heart

Since our humble beginnings in 1946 when John Kilby started the business reclaiming and recycling boxes at a time of severe raw material shortages after WW2, we have been dedicated to promoting eco-friendly packaging by using renewable, sustainable resources and incorporating recycled materials into the ranges. With a product offering of predominantly paper-based materials, including boxes, paper bags and mailers, paper rolls and tape, Kilby Packaging achieved FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council) accreditation (C169111) in 2021, ensuring that the FSC certified products are made from paper sourced from responsibly managed forests.

Family owned and managed

As an independent, family, run company, we guarantee individual attention whatever the size of your business. In 1955 our founder’s son, Rex, was welcomed into the company, at our Hollywood, South Birmingham location. Rex was pivotal in growing the company through acquisitions and diversification over the coming years, expanding the site greatly in the 1970s to accommodate the manufacture of corrugated boxes as well as the print and conversion of self-adhesive tapes. 1989 saw the start of the 3^rd generation of the family and we became BSI quality management accredited, underlining the ethos for quality and reliable products with excellent customer service. Last year, the family tradition continued, as we welcomed in the 4^th generation.

In 2019 we invested in a corrugated manufacturing plant in Northamptonshire which has grown significantly since the acquisition, supplying corrugated packaging in a variety of styles, formats and materials. This has helped to fulfil the growing demand for customised, made-to-fit packaging which is creatively designed and enhances product appeal. The portfolio also now includes printed paper bags and ecommerce mailers as well as printed self-adhesive paper tapes.

Direct Thermal Labels in Stock

What are thermal labels?

Thermal labels are used with direct thermal printers. This means no ink is needed to print the labels, the machines use heat to imprint the information on. This makes thermal labels a cost-effective way to print labels and removes the possibility of ink being smudged and the label being unreadable.

They are mainly used for deliveries, logistics and barcodes and are quick and easy to use, providing clear labelling for shipping providers. With increased growth in ecommerce sites such as Ebay, Esty and Vinted, these labels are the perfect fit.

Why Royal Mail previously supplied free labels

Royal Mail will now be charging £4.69 per roll for self-adhesive thermal labels, which were free. The free label scheme supported many business account holders, especially smaller business owners. The scheme encouraged businesses to use approved label formats to reduce any wastage. It also standardised the postage process and made it hassle free from business to consumer.

Although Royal Mail has not publicly detailed all the reasons behind the decision, rising operational costs and supply chain pressures may be contributing factors.

What this means for your business

Businesses will not need to increase their budgets on postal supplies. While the cost per label is low, this can become a high added cost for varying sizes of companies which may lead to increased prices for customers.

Plastic Levy- Plastic Packaging Tax

The UK Plastic Packaging tax is set to take effect from April 2022. If you are wondering what this new tax is about and whether it will affect your business, we have summarised the details below.

What is the Plastic Packaging Tax?

The government announced a new tax is to be implemented to plastic packaging from April 2022. A tax will apply to plastic packaging produced or imported into the UK that does not contain at least 30% recycled plastic.

Why has it been introduced?

The aim of this tax is to provide a clear economic incentive for business to use recycled materials in the production of plastic packaging, which will create greater demand for this material and in turn stimulate increased levels of recycling and collection of plastic waste, diverting it away from landfill or incineration.

The government wants to introduce a tax rate which is significant enough to change manufacturer behaviour and drive a demand for recycled plastic, while not imposing excessive burdens on business. A rate has been announced £200 per tonne tax rate for packaging with less than 30% recycled plastic.

How to mediate the effects of the tax on my business?

At Kilby Packaging we continually review our product range to look for new, innovative materials and more environmentally friendly. We introduced self-adhesive paper tape, plain and printed, for consumers wanting to move away from filmic tapes. We have one of the largest ranges of paper mailers, driven by a desire to replace plastic mailers with something more sustainable and attractive.

We have introduced a handy dispenser pack for paper void filling as well as offering paper cushioning machines for companies with higher quantities of shipments. And of course, we mustn’t forget our box range, made of recycled and recyclable corrugated paper.

Increased Box Making Capacity

Following our successful acquisition of a corrugated box manufacturing site based in Little Addington, near Kettering, Northamptonshire, we are pleased to announce that we have greater capacity to produce a bespoke box, any style or size.

This being our second manufacturing site means we have greater scope for the manufacture of a wider range of corrugated products in a variety of FEFCO styles and flutes including specialty boards. Our customers will benefit from a faster turnaround time and an improved bespoke service with a wider product offering.

We have kept the same production team who have many years’ experience in making good quality product and extended the team further to ensure excellent customer service levels.

Celebrating Love Paper Week 2026

Even in today’s digital world, paper remains unique in its ability to touch our lives. Paper is renewable, recyclable and the natural support of new ideas and creativity. Running from 2^nd-6^th February, we will be discussing why paper is such a sustainable, effective and attractive medium.

What is Love Paper Week?

Love Paper is a global initiative for the industry to collectively champion paper and sustainability to consumers and businesses. Love Paper’s main aim is to spread awareness and challenge misconceptions around paper as many people believe paper is not recycled much, however Europe has a recycling rate of 79% in 2023 (i), extending the benefits of paper’s renewable origin.

Why Paper Still Matters

Paper is one of the most renewable resources in the world. The paper industry promotes sustainable forest management to retain the reliable supply of wood fibre, the main source of paper. These forests, directly and indirectly, also provide wider benefits for local communities and support ecosystems that hold a high level of biodiversity.

The recyclability of paper is another major benefit. Paper can be recycled many times before it degrades. Recycling generally uses less energy and has lower emissions when compared to manufacturing with virgin fibres. Although, production of materials using virgin fibres utilises renewable energy sources making both options viable.

Opting for paper packaging is one way to help tackle climate change. Forests of all types play key roles in the global carbon cycle. European forests act as a major carbon sink. Between 2010 and 2020 the average annual sequestration of carbon in forest biomass reached 155 million tonnes in the European region (ii). Unlike plastic, paper is biodegradable and can break down naturally, making it beneficial for the environment.

Paper still plays a huge part in our everyday lives. From packaging and communication to education and creative expression, paper is a medium that can’t be fully replaced with a digital alternative. The tactile experience and functionalities of paper are imperative to young learners growing up in a digital world.

England’s Simpler Recycling Scheme

To maintain the quality of recycled paper products, it is vital that paper is collected separately from other materials. This allows the recycling process to be more efficient when sorting and grading.

From 31^st March 2026 there will be major changes with how recycling collections work and are separated, known as Simpler Recycling. This scheme aims to remove any confusion in terms of recycling, as many previous recycling stipulations were made by individual councils.

The Simpler Recycling system will apply to both households and workplaces throughout England. The rules state there will be separate waste collections for food waste, recyclable materials (glass, plastic, metal etc), residual waste (non-recyclable) and paper and card (iii).

As paper can be recycled multiple times, this system improves the quality of recycled paper products by removing the possibility of contaminated paper waste. Once paper has food residuals or has been mixed with non-recyclable materials it makes it difficult to process. This could lead to paper going into landfill rather than being recycled. These rules emphasise clear separation, making recycling paper easier.

Eco product of the month - making more sustainable choices in packaging

How can we make more sustainable choices in all areas of our lives? A big question, and one that will resonate with many people when they look at the amount of packaging they've generated from just one visit to their favourite supermarket.

However, packaging cannot be avoided entirely, and because of this, businesses and consumers should focus their efforts on making sustainable and responsible choices. The packaging industry should be at the forefront of the drive to help people make informed selections when it comes to necessary packaging. Where packaging is recyclable, the more so the better, and encouraging the reuse of recycled plastic materials is also key to reduce the output of waste plastic.

Each month we are showcasing a product which we feel gives you an alternative, sustainable choice for your packaging materials. One of our team has selected the product and tells you why they like it.

This months product is printed paper tape and is chosen by Lynn;

Paper is the natural choice for me if youre looking to improve your green credentials you cant get much better than a product which is made of either recycled paper fibres or from virgin fibres from trees grown in sustainably managed forests. The paper we use for our printed tape contains 100% recycled fibres and has a hot melt adhesive which sticks well on boxes. We use water-based inks to print in up to 3 colours. I think it looks eco-chic and its also a great way to advertise your company whilst showing you care about the environment.

Current Position of Corrugated Cardboard

We are encountering extraordinary lead times for the supply and demand of corrugated cardboard, the likes of which we have never seen before. The demand for paper has continued to grow across Europe, leading to sizable cost increases on raw materials, for both kraft and recycled papers and significantly extended lead times from days to months. We are facing a combination of market conditions which are contributing to these extremely challenging times such as Covid-19 and Brexit.

The Confederation of Paper Industries recently commented:

“Clearly the pandemic has significantly changed society, not least in its approach to shopping. We have seen dramatic increases in online ordering, with the consequent demand for corrugated packaging that is required to ensure that goods are protected.”

“The pandemic has also had an impact on global trade, with an imbalance in containers around the world, which has had an impact on transport logistics. Companies have introduced safe working practices, but there have still been occasions when employees are required to self-isolate with the consequent impact on staffing and production.”

“Many companies will have been stockpiling in the final months of 2020. With the implications of Brexit now taking effect, products entering the UK can be subject to delays at customs. There have been examples of significant delays over the course of recent weeks.”

Packaging Legislations – What do I need to know?

If your business or organisation produces or uses packaging, or sells packaged goods, you may be classed as an ‘obligated packaging producer.’ It ensures that packaging producers take responsibility for their environmental impact and contribute to the costs of recycling and recovery in the aim too:

Reduce the amount of packaging produced in the first place.
Reduce how much packaging waste goes to landfill.
Increase the amount of packaging waste that’s recycled and recovered.

Businesses are obligated under the regulations should they meet both of the following criteria:

You handled 50 tonnes of packaging material in the previous calendar year.
You have a turnover of more than 2 million a year (based on the last financial years accounts).

Plastic Packaging Tax - What do you need to know?

The plastic packaging tax comes into effect from 1st April 2022.

This new tax applies to plastic packaging produced or imported into the UK that does not contain at least 30% recycled materials. The rate of the tax will be £200 per metric tonne of plastic packaging, and it is hoped that it will provide a clear incentive for business to use recycled materials in the production of plastic packaging, which will create greater demand for this material and in turn stimulate increased levels of recycling and collection of plastic waste, diverting it away from landfill or incineration.

From 1st April 2022, as an importer we will be liable to pay the tax on eligible products which we supply to you and will be submitting quarterly data to the HMRC. We have introduced new products which contain more than 30% recycled content which are not liable for the tax and intend to stock more alternatives in the future.

Corrugated Board has always been known for it's strong, environmental credentials and in the current climate of protecting our natural resources and the desire for more sustainable packaging, it has never been more popualr. In addition, the increase in e-commerce and the desire to keep materials to a minimum, has created a stronger demand for made-to-measure corrugated boxes.

Kilby Packaging has been manufacturing corrugated boxes since the 1970s, offering a variety of materials, designs and print options, originally to manufacturers in the Midlands and Northwest. Due to the demand for customised boxes and the need for shorter lead times, last year we invested in a box manufacturing site in Kettering, Northamptonshire. Since the acquisition, we have totally transformed the site and workflow.

Importance of the circular economy, what is it?

The idea of a circular economy is to reduce waste and make the most of resources. By adopting these principles, we will reduce our impact on the environment, conserve resources and create a more sustainable future.

Why the interest?

Legislation, particularly in Europe, is driving companies to adopt circular business models through various means, including public procurement, financial incentives, and product regulations.

What does it involve?

Design for Longevity: Products are designed to last longer, be easily repaired, and eventually recycled. This reduces the need for constant production of new items.
Resource Efficiency: Efficient use of resources is prioritized, ensuring minimal waste during production and consumption.
Reuse and Recycling: Materials and products are reused and recycled as much as possible. This includes upcycling, where old products are transformed into new ones with added value.
Closed-Loop Systems: A circular economy operates in a closed loop where waste is minimized, and resources are continuously cycled back into the system.
Sustainable Consumption: Consumers are encouraged to buy less, choose sustainable products, and support companies that prioritize environmental responsibility.

Corrugated packaging – Circular by Nature.

Corrugated board is not only renewable and recyclable but also one of the most recycled materials in Europe. In addition it protects goods on their journey, ensuring that the supply chain moves efficiently and sustainably.

The Forest Stewardship Council®, FSC®, operates the world’s most rigorous and trusted forest certification system. FSC is actively supporting the transition to a circular system, helping its certificate holders and stakeholders engage in the circular economy. Look out for FSC Recycled and FSC Mix certified products, that ensure forest-based fibres are in use for as long as possible, avoiding their disposal . Circularity will reduce the pressure on the environment, the forests, and their ecosystems.

In summary

A circular economy model where the lifecycle of products is extended, is much more sustainable than the linear model of take-make- consume- throwaway. Significant cost savings can be made by reducing packaging used, redesigning more durable and lightweight packaging, and minimising waste. Your customers will appreciate it too!

What is an 0427 Box?

A FEFCO 0427 is an internationally recognised code for the design style of a die-cut box. The most common styles of box design are all given codes from the ‘FEFCO’, The European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers.

An 0427 box is the traditional “goto” style for posting your products, popular to use for subscription box services. The boxes are supplied flat packed for convenient storage and are easy to assembly with sturdy “ear lock” tabs to secure the lid, avoiding the need for glue or tape. This box style is ideal for sending a variety of items, with many sizes complying to the Royal Mail small parcel sizing requirements to reduce postal costs where possible.

The majority our postal boxes are all made to the 0427 design and are available for next day delivery in a variety of sizes and colours.

Packaging and waste, particularly the effects of plastic on the environment, continue to be hot topics on the news agenda this year. Each month we are showcasing a product which we feel gives you an alternative, sustainable choice for your packaging materials. One of our team, Karen, has selected the product and tells you why she likes it;

My choice of eco product this month is paper mailing bags. They are made of kraft paper from trees grown in sustainably managed, certified forests. The larger bags are ideal for a range of different products and have a self-adhesive strip so theyre quick to pack and seal. I like the smaller bags which have a flat bottom so that they stand up whilst you fill them and they have a thick, strong adhesive strip. Both paper mailing bags are easily recycled. As we are all trying to reduce the plastics we use I think these paper bags are a really smart and eco-friendly alternative; they look great and stand out from the crowd too.

We have put together a 4-step guide to creating your bespoke box, so get started today!

Steps:

1) Box style: choose your FEFCO box design, these designs can be adapted but give a good base to work from. Our in-house design team will ensure that the design you have picked is appropriate can create a 3D image to bring your design to life.

2) Box size: all box sizing is measured by internal dimensions, length by width by depth. We can create a CAD drawing of your box and will supply a sample for you to check it’s a perfect fit, before we proceed with production.

3) Material: the performance of your box is dependent on the liner and fluting, these can vary in grammage and recycled content. Depending on how you ship and store, or the weight of your product, our sales team can advise on the best option, whether that will be to make your packaging robust and maximise protection or ensure you have a high-end quality print.

4) Plain or printed: when you have decided on the style, size, and material it is now time to design your artwork (if required). We can print simple text to full colour images and everything in between.
